Romance scams, also known as confidence scams, have emerged as the most financially devastating internet-facilitated crime, according to recent reports from the FBI. Donna Gregory of the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) highlighted the alarming trend, revealing that the average victim loses over $100,000.

In the last six months of 2014 alone, IC3 documented more than $82 million in losses from these scams. Women accounted for 82 percent of the reported losses, while men sustained the remaining 18 percent. Both the amount of financial losses and the number of complaints have seen significant increases in recent years.

Romance scammers are increasingly using social media platforms, in addition to traditional dating websites, to target unsuspecting victims. Gregory emphasized that these predators troll the internet, promising love and romance to lure their victims into emotional and financial traps.

The FBI urges anyone who has fallen victim to a romance scam or suspects they are being targeted to report the incident at www.ic3.gov.
